The project

The plan gives its best frontage to the garden, and the interior keeps that view in play throughout: the double-height living room glazed to the lawn, the family sitting room beyond it, the dining room turned so the table sits parallel to the glass.

Scale is the difficulty in a house like this, and it is handled by repeating a small palette at different weights. Stone runs from the floors up onto full-height wall panels; dark timber forms the tall joinery bays and screens that give the large rooms their rhythm; bronze appears only in edges, frames and light fittings. Seating is kept low and largely curved, so the furniture softens rooms the architecture keeps rectilinear, and the bedrooms take the same materials at a quieter volume.
